Hello. I'm Isaac Bernier-Doyle and I'm the Artistic Director of the award-winning Off West End theatre Upstairs at the Gatehouse in North London where I have been making work, traversing an insurmountable email backlog, and programming wall-to-wall bangers since 2023.
As co-director of the award-winning production company Chromolume alongside business- and life-partner (strictly in that order) Annlouise Butt, I have worked on world premieres, offbeat revivals, and international transfers—while dedicating particular energy to identifying promising new work and providing the guidance, space, and resources to help it move forwards.
I'm particularly drawn to work that takes big swings: socially-engaged plays and compositionally-ambitious, craft-led musical theatre.
HELP, I GOT SCRAMBLED!
THANKS!
Upstairs at the Gatehouse is an award-winning Off West End theatre in Highgate, North London. The top theatre in London (at least by altitude), it has been a home for new work and reimagined classics since 1997 when John and Katie Plews of Ovation Theatre transformed a derelict Victorian music hall into an essential feature of the London theatre landscape.
In 2023, they handed the reins to former theatre manager Annlouise Butt and her partner, me. Operating as Chromolume, we've doubled down on championing ambitious new writing that takes genuine creative risks with zero funding. This has proven gently terrifying and hugely enjoyable in equal measure.
