As Artistic Director of a theatre specialising in new plays and musicals, dramaturgy informs every aspect of my job. Every week involves hours of submissions meetings, dozens of new scripts, and high-stakes decisions about the creative and commercial viability of an enormous variety of work.
I've worked with writers at all stages of development—first draft to full production—and all stages of their careers—first-timers to BAFTA-winners. Helming a venue gives me clear, economically tangible insight into what audiences want and how work can be positioned, sculpted, and sharpened to meet or subvert those expectations.
